Onsen Jamboree Episode 1 Part 1

Narration begins by talking about a certain mountain somewhere in Tokyo before popping up with the title card. This chapter is called Begin the Onsen Jamboree! Narration then weaves back in to talk about how the day of the Scout Jamboree event being held by the Aoyama Missionaries has come. The skies are clear, the breeze is gentle, and the participants are gathering at the foot of the mountains. A bunch of mobs get panned through before Ryouta expresses his amazement of all the people around. You talk about how the day of the jamboree has come, how there's so many people, and how there are Transients you haven't seen before.
Shirou says it’s one thing to hear how Transients are always coming in to Tokyo from the Pillars around Tokyo, but another to see them all here. Ryouta is excited about this since it's a chance to make another 100 friends. Shirou talks loudly about how this is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to come across new perspectives and cultures in Tokyo, and that updating your knowledge and growing is what you guys should be seeking.
Ryouta tells Shirou to stop because he's starting to draw attention. The Evils walk over to Shirou's leg and lightly tap it, and Shirou picks it up and holds it to him to calm himself down. You ask Shirou if he's settled down, and Shirou apologizes for suddenly getting carried away. Chouji pops up and laughs, saying he understands how Shirou feels since it feels like more Transients are appearing. The scout jamboree doesn't happen that often, but Chouji notes that there's a tendency for participants to increase each time it's run.
Ryouta says that wearing the scout uniform makes him suddenly feel excited. Shirou says that participants are wearing scarves to make them easy to distinguish, and that the Evils are happy to wear them too. Ryouta laughs about the Evils striking a pose and looking cool, and you can either ask how you look in the outfit, compliment Shirou and the Evils, or compliment Chouji and Ryouta.
In A, Ryouta says you do of course, and that Kengo would admire how you look in the scout uniform. Shirou is a bit tongue tied but agrees, at a loss for words to express himself but settling on thinking that you look wonderful as usual. In B, Shirou thanks you and admits to feeling a little embarrassed at hearing you say so. He then turns to the Evils when they start making noises to compliment them too on the scarves and hats. He also tells them that there's a lost child sign inside the hats, so if they do get lost they should show that sign to people. In C, Ryouta laughs and thanks you, saying it's embarrassing when you stare so hard. Chouji says his and Ryouta's uniforms are actually a size too small and ask if it's strange that they forced themselves into them. Ryouta freaks out a little at him saying this out loud before wondering if he's getting shy too. But in any case, Chouji asks you guys to follow him to the event reception.
Scene shifts over to the stage area, and Shirou comments on Ryouta not really having settled down. He also asks if he's recognized someone since he keeps looking around everywhere. Ryouta answers that it's the opposite in that he was wondering if a friend was around given the amount of people there. You brush the idea off as unlikely, but Ryouta still keeps the idea in mind for funsies. He catches a glimpse of Moritaka among all the people walking around, and you either say you saw him too or ask why Ryouta said his name.
Either way Ryouta says he saw Moritaka among the crowd. He runs over to try to find him, but quickly loses sight of him and gets disappointed. Shirou suggests Ryouta might have mistaken someone else as Moritaka since there are a lot of dogmen Transients around. Ryouta doesn't seem to believe so but considers the idea, though he says he did notice that sword sheath Moritaka always carries around.
Shirou brings up that Moritaka originally turned down the invite and would have sent a text if he were coming. Ryouta admits he has a point and checks the app's message menu to make sure. Chouji says the reception can handle all of you at once and is about to suggest you guys head to common area when he notices Ryouta distracted and asks him what's up. Ryouta says it's nothing and suggests you guys get on with things.
Shirou asks if it's okay for him and the Evils to go in together. Chouji says it is and directs him to talk to one of the scout leaders. They'll get instructions after the introductions and questions. In the meantime Chouji has meetings and stuff to get to, so it'll be after the opening ceremonies before he'll probably see you again. Shirou thanks him, and Chouji says bye to the Evils too before heading off.
Inside the reception area you guys get taken to a room with a bunch of screens put up dividing the place into smaller pieces. You fill out the standard paperwork of name, residence, emergency contact number, then get a photo taken. Eventually a wood angel tells you that all the paperwork is done, then hands you guys something. Shirou asks what it is, so the angel explains that it's a program for the event. It's also got some warnings and emergency outlines written in it too. The program will also be used after the opening ceremony, so he asks you to keep a copy on hand all the time. The angel asks you to wait for now, and a leader will come to explain and have some Q&A soon.
You guys leave the area and look at each other. Ryouta is a bit worried about the Q&A session and worries about what he'll be asked. Shirou laughs and says he's getting too worked up, figuring it'll just be some safety warnings and goal explanations. He suddenly stops when you guys bump into Kimun Kamui suddenly appearing. Both are shocked by this, and Kimun immediately gives them a pop quiz asking what they'd do if they happen to run into a wild bear while at camp.
Shirou and Ryouta freak out about a bear showing up, presumably because even in Housamo Japanese people are drilled with the idea that bears are violent and dangerous. Kimun is startled by their reaction as he tries to get them to stop screaming and running in circles so they can answer the question already. You are either surprised at a teacher bear appearing, say this is a nature Q&A, or think to yourself that you want to touch Kimun's fur.
In C there's some extra lines as Kimun gets the feeling that his whole pelt will be given to someone. He can't seem to figure out what it is he's feeling, first thinking it's terror before thinking it might be delight. He then composes himself and returns to the subject. In any case Kimun picks Ryouta and prompts him to come up with an answer right away. Ryouta takes a moment to think before guessing that he should play dead. Kimun yells that he's wrong, and Ryouta complains that a ciramantep spanked his butt.
Kimun explains that while playing dead might work, there's the risk of it drawing a bear's attention. He makes a point of warning you guys to stay away from bears that have tasted human food because in the worst case they'll carry you off. Ryouta freaks out and says he doesn't want to be eaten. Kimun then turns to you and prompts you to answer. You can either answer run away as fast as you can, slowly back away without turning away from the bear, or punch the bear out in one hit.
In A, Kimun says that's the worst thing you can possibly do. Turning your back on an animal is telling it that it's superior to you, attracting their interest and making them think of you as prey. In B, Kimun says that keeping eye contact and staying on guard as you back off is a good idea. But if you ever turn your back on them they might attack again. In C, Kimun is surprised you'd consider that. He admits that if you can't get away then it is an idea, but warns you that wounded beasts are persistent.
Anyways, Kimun says you seem to have thought about it a bit, then prompts Shirou to answer. Shirou thinks quietly for a moment before suggesting the idea of making noise like with a bell or singing loudly. It's not a one size fits all solution, but he has read that there are a lot of success cases where you let the bear know where you are. Kimun is impressed but points out that this is a preventative measure. If you have already run into a bear then this might just provoke it. Shirou says he is working under different premises, but you have to be prepared for anything when mountain climbing. You say that's what Zaou taught you guys and/or say if trouble happens on the mountains that's his cue to show up.
Flashback pops up to Zaou talking about taking stock of your situation and figuring out what to do and thinking how to prevent things. Back to the present Shirou explains that he was taught how to avoid running into a bear instead of what to do if he did run into one. He then digs through his pockets and pulls out a bear-warding bell like he brought up earlier. Kimun is quiet, and Shirou says that if he actually encounters a bear he'll think then because his options there are different. He wants to calmly consider what he can do based on who he's with and the situation he ends up in.
Kimun starts laughing, then eventually agrees that there is no one answer. It is important however to think about these things before they actually happen though. Kimun then describes bears as normally gentle and cowardly, so if you don't disturb their dens or cubs, they'll often leave first. He warns against agitating them since they might turn into wen kamui.
When you ask about wen kamui, Kimun explains that humans in Kamuy Kotan call animals that have harmed people that. He describes them as pitiful beasts who won't be referred to by their original names ever again. His eyes look sad for an instant, as if he were pitying his fellows. Shirou asks who Kimun is, so he introduces himself and says he grants blessings to the beloved children of man as a servant of heaven. He's also a member of the Missionaries and participating here in the jamboree. Kimun then apologizes for tricking you guys and welcomes you all to the event.
Kimun likes your response when you answer back, commenting that it feels like it'll be worth it to teach you guys. He spaces out a little as he talks to himself about wanting to give you guys gifts, and Ryouta and Shirou are shocked and baffled when Kimun suddenly takes the bear pelt he's wearing off (along with apparently all his other clothes) and commands them to wear it after offering it to them. You either yell about how unexpected this is, say this is the fearfulness of a wild animal, or think out loud about rubbing his fur.
B has an extra line where Ryouta points out that this is scary but also not quite what you're talking about. C has a different extra line where Shirou suggests as class representative that you do something about your tendency to go there no matter what happens. In any case, Kimun chases you guys around for a few minutes before shouting out loud and clapping you on the shoulders. He orders you to take his pelt before he stops and notices something, then sniffs at you. You ask if something is wrong, ask if you smell, and/or say you're ticklish.
Whatever you choose, Kimun talks to himself about maybe being wrong but he isn't sure. He doesn't pay any attention to whatever you say and decided to check something on file. He looks up your name and mentions sensing something old and familiar from you.
The loudspeakers turn on at this point to play some weird camp jingle. Ryouta asks what this music is and what some of the lyrics mean. Shirou answers that the lyrics essentially mean "hurrah" and is a word often used in scouting situations as a call or a cheer. Kimun gets a bit alarmed that the welcoming ceremony is starting and tells you guys to head to the plaza or whatever before Arslan starts talking. The episode part ends with Shirou saying he understands and asking Kimun to put on some clothes.
