MC: Thanks Gaisei! Go team, VP Charge!
Nessen: Thank you! Time for the finale!
Yohack: Full power unlock!
Maculata: All-in aggression!
Astosis: OOF! ...okay, it's finally over.
Astosis is brought to his knees. Gaisei approaches!
Gaisei: How enjoyable. Goodbye.
MC: Stop!

Astosis: !!
Gaisei almost cuts Astosis's throat but stops at MC's command!
Gaisei: Ah, excuse me. I forgot myself in the face of your power.
Astosis: >:(
Gaisei: You've lost, but I see you still have the will to fight. Keep it aflame and fight me again one day.

Gaisei looks satisfied and mentally checks out.

MC: No. The stream's off.
Astosis: What are you saying? I already said that I was acting as a Chasseur...
MC: It's already over. What happened has been streamed locally, so people will talk.

Astosis: W-what are you talking about--
MC: There's no need for an enemy anymore. No Chasseur Astosis...right?
Astosis: !! ...so you noticed?

Nessen: Oh, and it was Astosis who sent Yohack and I out from the interrogation room. He already knew MC and I are friends, so he'd have prevented me from acting if he were in agreement with the Chasseur.
Yohack: There's also what he told us when he had us look for evidence!

Astosis: That window is the same as before. The memories are still there... I never forgot about your parents.

Yohack: It's how we solved the mystery!
MC: And it was Astosis who lifted the space region lock, right?

Nessen: He did!? But we were in the middle of fighting...
Maculata: He turned it off and pretended he didn't notice? That would mean...
Astosis: ...truly impressive. I have nothing to add. But why do this? I still cooperated with the Chasseur and pulled you into our situation. I am responsible for what you went through. Shouldn't you be judging me then?
Party: (frowns)
MC: Then tell us the truth about this incident.
Yohack: I-I wanna know too! What happened to you? Did you really want to sacrifice yourself for all this!?
Astosis looks like he might give up for a second.
Astosis: ...why not? It's all over anyway.

Astosis goes to lean against the balcony railing.
Astosis: ...it's nothing special. Just some kid trying hard to end things.
Astosis (narrating): Father was a great attorney, always in pursuit of justice. When Courrèges opened up back in the day, lots of incidents with outsiders occurred. Father did his best to mediate for everyone in and out. I often saw him work at court, boldly digging for the truth. He was my hero, and I followed in his footsteps. I wanted to be like him.
Astosis (narrating): That was around the time I met you, Yohack. Your parents consulted Father about offworld business, and we came to know each other through that. That might've been the last time my life was quiet. I worked hard to become an attorney and finally started working in my father's office when...
Flashback Astosis: No, Dad!
Astosis (narrating): It was like any other day. He went ahead while I cleaned up after breakfast. He wasn't at the office and didn't pick up the phone. I looked for him...and eventually found him dead in the woods near town.
Flashback Astosis: ...trial records and a journal?
Astosis (narrating): Then one day after his funeral, I found his notes about how the Chasseur faked the evidence in his trials. He regretted being unable to stop them and not telling me the truth either.

Yohack: Oh...
Astosis: It's my fault my father died.
Yohack: W-what? No!
Astosis: ...thank you, but I still want it to take responsibility for it. And I wanted to bring justice for him.
Nessen and Maculata frown.
Astosis: I don't remember much after that. The office became mine, and I had no confidence as an attorney. I worked in other offices for years until I got people to trust me. Then I had my first real trial as an attorney as...
MC: ...Yohack's parents' trial.
Yohack: (frown)
Astosis: Correct. I failed, just like my father did. It's my fault I lost family again.

Yohack: Astosis, it's not your fault!
Nessen: Yes! It's the Chasseur who are wrong for faking evidence!
Astosis: But it was still me who stood as their defense attorney! I couldn't acquit them!
Yohack: Astosis...
Astosis: So I swore I'd one day expose them all and judge them. And I became their accomplice to find the truth. It took years working to find information.
Maculata: Which all lead to tonight?
Astosis: Correct. Another conspiracy involving the Poderna to push people to isolationism. I cozied up to get in on the plan before the festival, then got you all in as festival security.
Nessen: Excuse me, why didn't they suspect you of anything and take you off the security team?
Astosis: That was the goal. They did suspect me, I was to be held responsible, and I would be kicked out of town after the foreigners were.
Nessen: O-oh. All according to plan then?
MC: ...wait a minute.

Maculata: Right, if none of us were here, this plot would never have gotten solved. Isn't that a stretch since I was coincidentally here?
Astosis: Perhaps. I had to keep modifying the plan today.
Yohack: w-wait what?
Astosis: ...the original plan was for all the heroes to get arrested deliberately. Once falsely charged and the whole city was watching, I would expose all the Chasseur's deeds.
Maculata: ...so you were going to use us? Why change the plan then?
Astosis: To stream the truth to the whole galaxy. The Chasseur would look clearly like villains in this narrative, and other planets would have to speak up against them. And it was because I saw you again that I thought to change it, Yohack.
Yohack: WHAT?
Astosis: I figured you of all people could open my office safe. If someone else could expose the Chasseur, there'd be no need for the deliberate arrests and trial. I could just say on stream I was a ringleader of this plot and tell the truth. So I still used you all in the end... that should be everything.
Yohack: No, there's still one other thing! Why do you need to be judged? You haven't--
Astosis: Because I didn't do anything. I still let you all be abused horribly knowing it was coming. I still used you all.
MC: Really? Then you wouldn't have bothered protecting us.

Astosis: !?
Maculata: The interrogation, right? You sounded legit then.
MC: Yeah, same as that other time.
Flashback!
Astosis: ...thank you, MC.
Present
Astosis: ...you're just seeing what you want to see.
Astosis looks away.
Yohack: So maybe you used us. You still helped us, though. So tell us what you really feel.
Astosis: ...you are all so nosy. Heh, I've lost completely.
Astosis gives up and smiles.
Astosis: I wanted you to be the one to finish things when I saw you again, Yohack. I should be judged along with the Chasseur for my manipulations of you. I knew what they were doing, and I could not prevent it. You have the right to judge me, so I changed the plan so that you would be the one revealing the truth.
Astosis seems to relax as he closes his eyes, done.

Yohack: ...having that right doesn't make me happy at all!
Astosis: B-but your parents!
Yohack: They're doing great at the planet they moved too! Their business is booming! And my leaving meant I found my own dream too! I'm a master locksmith! You aren't at fault! We all knew you believed in us the whole time, and it meant everything as we made new lives!
Astosis: But I...
Yohack: We're fine! Please start living for yourself.
Yohack grabs Astosis's hands and smiles.
Astosis: Really? But I've been trying to atone all this time...
MC: Yohack said you can! You can stop the one man crusade now.

Maculata: I mean, I'LL hold your using MC against you. But the actual decision on your fate?
Nessen: Yes, that's for the people of Courrèges.
Yohack: It'll be fine! They know how much you care.
Astosis: ...maybe I can be an attorney and hero again. Can I really...?
Yohack: Maybe try visiting other planets then! Muirauqa IV is nice!
Nessen: And for hero work you need to contract with an agency. How about mine, S&S Heroes? We're the service work agency, and they'd love to have an attorney sign on.
Maculata: Oh if you do, I'll need to hire you for consultation work for expanding my business here!
MC: Come visit us on Earth too. Then we can start over getting to know each other.
Astosis: O-okay that's quite a lot...! But living for myself for once? Thank you, I think this is a first for me.

Several days later. The Chasseur have been shut down and MC calls in heroes from offplanet to handle guard duty. Cleanup and sorting is done, and now the party is heading back to the space port to go home.
Maculata: Okay that took longer than expected, but it was nice to see the local fashions and Poderna more!
Yohack: I got to talk to people in town! Maybe I'll come visit more often!
Nessen: I'd like to join you on those times. Sightseeing proved informative. Maybe if I orders sheets and curtains from here, my guests will enjoy things even more!
MC: Oh yeah, you ever decide what your event's going to be?
Nessen: Oh, you remember that? I'll be going over specifics with my staff, but perhaps we'll recreate an old hot spring festival.
Maculata: Wonderful! Did Courrèges give you that idea?
Nessen: Yes, something traditional but aggressively new to borrow your lexicon...
Maculata: By all means! I'm looking forward to it!
Nessen: I'll be sure to invite you all when it happens.
Maculata: Nice, I should call up everyone in the office.
Yohack: Me too! Hehe, and on that day...
MC: You wanna go with them, right? Nice. I should ask everyone in my agency too.

Astosis comes over.
Astosis: ...hello, I came to see you off.
Surprised party!
MC: Astosis! Things are done and you can walk around alone now?
Astosis: Yes, I figured I should inform you of such.
Yohack: Yay, we can talk one more time before we go!
Astosis: Heh, yes we can talk after my report. So, the main Chasseur members have been arrested. All past evidence of their misdeeds have been confiscated and the organization has been ordered to disband. Depending on how the trials go, they'll have to reorganize and their power will be reduced. Offworld hero agencies will take charge and make them an anti-villain, anti-Monster group.
Maculata: Nice. That's what they were originally, yes?
Astosis: Indeed. And now there will be initiative for them to exchange knowledge with other planets.
Nessen: I see... I expect next time the town will be even more amazing.
MC: Oh yeah, what's next for you Astosis?

Astosis: Well I'll have my own trial to go through. One of my father's friends will represent me, and the townspeople come visit me in shifts in the meantime. It's how I got permission to come here. The people really have been supporting me.
Nessen: ...that's a lovely thing.
Astosis: Thank you, Nessen. I finally understand what that means. And Yohack...we're finally able to prove your parents' innocence after all this time. The evidence has been presented, so a retrial is set up. My father's friend will also be in charge of it. I can't be in charge myself, but I can at least give information.
Yohack: Awesome! I should call my parents and tell them!
Astosis: Please do. And ask them to visit. They're like family, and I'd like to show them how I've been.
Yohack: We'll all come for sure!

Astosis: And once my trial's been settled, I think I'd like to travel outside for once.
Yohack: What!?
Surprised Maculata and Nessen!
Yohack: Wow, that means we might see each other elsewhere!
Astosis: Yes...I think I have some idea of what I want to do now. I want to bring the truth out for others, so that they don't suffer under falsehoods like Courrèges did.
MC: That's a great dream.
Astosis: It's all thanks to you. MC, if we ever meet again I promise to help you. If you need a hero or an attorney, I'll do my best for you. As thanks.
A gentle wind blows by. The rest of the party gets into a space taxi.
Maculata: You sure you didn't want to take the next space taxi out and talk with Astosis some more?
Yohack: Yeah! I'll be back again with my parents!
Nessen: Wonderful. I'd like to come back too one day...partly for work too, yes, but still.
Maculata: Same. Some day in the future...
MC: I'm sure Courrèges will be a great city.

Standoff at the castle balcony when...
Maculata: Hello everybody, I'm back and I kept the Poderna safe!
Yeah, that!
Maculata: So, time to discuss things and lay it all out.
Red: So you DID steal the Poderna!
Maculata: Calm down, you. We're here to straighten things out.
Red shuts his mouth. Maculata turns to Gaisei.
Maculata: So I know you're having fun, but could you stop for a minute, Gaisei or whatever your name is?
Gaisei: ...are you offering to dance with me instead?
Maculata: I could, but could you let us speak first? Maybe we'll dance with you after that.
Gaisei: ...I suppose I can take a break if I can expect more fun later.
Maculata: Oh you can count on that. You'll join us too, right Astosis?
Astosis: Of course. With all evidence and the Poderna here, we should have our proof ready to go.
MC: Right, let's end this.

Maculata: So back when a fight happened in the ballroom, I was guarding the Poderna. Nobody suspicious was nearby. Then the lights went out. And then I heard something moving.
Nessen: Was it the wall moving?
Maculata: Yes, though I didn't know just then.
Red: ...
Maculata: I notice you don't seem surprised.
Red says nothing.
Yohack: What happened then?
Maculata: Someone came out, someone I'm sure we all know now. Anyways, I grabbed the Poderna and hid under a tablecloth that got knocked off during the fight.
Nessen: I don't know how to feel about that fight helping you...
Maculata: Same here... still, after that I kept watch. Whoever came from the secret passage went for where the Poderna was, but of course it wasn't there anymore.
Red: ...
Maculata: They panicked when they couldn't find it, and then I heard them say "the lights will be back on soon, secure the targ--the target's gone! I have to report back!"

Astosis: ...I see, so they were after the Poderna.
Maculata: So it seems. After that, I slipped into the secret wall as it was closing and followed the sneak. It was easy between the sounds of boots and having a racial darkness vision bonus.
Nessen: You managed to sneak in!? That was dangerous...
Maculata: There was a chance of solving things. Since the Chasseur didn't want people to know about the secret passage, there weren't lights inside. I just hide in shadows, and I'm good to go. Nobody noticed me. Must've been all the panic.
Maculata smiles at Nessen's concern.
Astosis: It's good the Poderna was undamaged, but why didn't you show yourself earlier?
Maculata: I'm getting to that. Right, MC?
MC: Yeah. I was surprised then, but we met up. Sorta.

Yohack: wait what? How?
Maculata: Well...sorry MC, I put these on you.
Maculata takes off those earcuffs she put on MC earlier.
Yohack: Oh right, that was before the party!
Maculata: Yes, these are communicators. I wasn't expecting to use them like this, so I should thank Crowne.
MC: Oh wait...
Maculata: Oh, you remember? Back at Parallel Flight.
Flashback!
Crowne: Here you go, funny request this time. Never woulda guessed you'd ask for a comm that looks like some accessory.
Maculata: Well of course, I have work to do and I need to look good. And if it doesn't exist, I just need to have it made.
Crowne: Huh, well that makes sense. But yeah, it's done! I'm sure no one will figure it out if they don't look closer at it. It's got short range audio output, but I couldn't finagle a voice lock in time, so it'll hear everything around you instead of just your voice.
Maculata: Wait are you trying to make me a spy or something? ...the design's perfect though, thanks.
Crowne: It's cool, come again!

Maculata: I stuck it on you in case we got separated, but the sneakiness helped out a lot and now I owe Crowne a beer.
Astosis: W-wait, you stuck a communicator on MC? Are you saying MC's been sharing everything with you since then?
Maculata: Exactly. I heard everything.
Red: WHAT? Wait...did you slip into the mid-investigation talks?
Yohack: U-um, are you talking about when Nessen and I went off?
Yohack can't keep up with the conversation.
Maculata: Oh right, I should go over that. So once I was alone in the secret passageway, I connected to MC's comm and heard what was happening. Once things were starting, I started talking.

Maculata: MC, do you read me? Keep up your poker face and update me while sounding natural. I know it won't be easy, but at least I can tell you the Poderna and I are all okay.
MC: ...I can explain.
Maculata: Roger. So after the lights went out...
One explanation later...
Maculata: And that's what happened. How dare they accuse you of stealing the Poderna. Now MC, don't let them pressure you, it just means they're desperate. They were going to steal the Poderna and frame us for it, before oopsies that's not working out! So they're pressing for a confession and fishing for info on the Poderna. We could just end this farce now but...
MC: I'm not done yet!
Maculata: Aww, how dependable. It's looking bad, but now's not the time to whine about it. We still have Nessen and Yohack helping us, so we wait for them to bring back proof. Until then, you need to stall. I'll be on standby. If it comes to it I'll use the Poderna as a decoy to keep you safe, so just run then, okay?
MC: ...it's fine.

Nessen: Oh. Well I'm glad you two could talk like so.
Yohack: Was I any help? Hehe, nice!

Maculata: Okay, I think we've filled enough details on that end. Long story short, we didn't try steal the Poderna.
Nessen: Yes, your circumstantial evidence about the window being the only exit has been disproven.
Yohack: ...yeah, since there's a secret passage.
Maculata: And the one who came out was on you Chasseur, yes? Not everyone knew about the passage, and if any of the guests didn't come back that would unnatural.
Red: ...urk!
Nessen: Now, are you still going to try to blame MC for what happened?

Astosis: Now that we have conclusive evidence, does the Chasseur have a rebuttal?
Red: ...
Astosis: ...well! Very impressive that you managed to prove your innocence in this case. Now is the time for closing arguments. Now please hand me the Poderna.
MC: ...we can't.

Maculata: Meaning it happened sometime between the festival's start and our seeing it.

Astosis: Yes. What would the people think if the Chasseur told everyone about how foreigners stole and defaced the Poderna?
Maculata: What the everloving hell are you on about?
Nessen: You intend to lie to the townsfolks for your own self-interest!?

Yohack: W-wait! Astosis, what's going on!? Everyone in town looks up to you, and you work so hard for them! Why!?
Astosis: Because of how it should be. You and your family know full well what that means.
Yohack: !!
Astosis: Courrèges is the city of tradition, shutting out the world to protect its autonomy and ways. It cannot change.
Yohack: But that makes no sense! People outside already know about Courrèges, and the workshop we visited had no problems with us! And plenty of outsiders enjoy the festival, so if we give it time--
Astosis: So Courrèges should accept them and lose its traditions?

Yohack: ...so, what's happening with MC looks a lot like what happened to my parents when they got kicked out of town.
Nessen: Wait, what? I thought you chose to leave.
Yohack: ...my parents were thrown out after being charged with a crime. They took me with them.
Nessen: Oh...so what do you mean by things being similar?
Yohack: My parents were clothing artisans! They were super popular and unlike everyone else, they used offworld creation techniques and had lots of offworlder customers. But the last time we had the full moon festival, this one order came in. They were asked to fix up the Poderna before it got put on display, then got arrested on vandalism charges.
Nessen: WHAT
Yohack: I know, right!? But at the trial they said they found scissors with their fingerprints and deported my parents for it. I was still a kid then, so I went with them.
Yohack looks down.

Nessen: ...did it hurt to come back after so long?
Yohack: Maybe when I first left...but after that I learned how to be a locksmith after meeting a master! Astosis and the people in town still believed in my parents until the end! Courrèges and Muirauqa IV are both my home!
Nessen: Oh, that's wonderful.
Yohack: Oh yeah, Astosis was part of my parents' trial back then and maybe saw the mat--oh wait right, we should check out Astosis's office!
Nessen: O-okay but why?
Yohack: Remember what Astosis said before we left?
Flashback!
Astosis: If you're going back to town, I wanted to tell you that window's the same as before, the memories are still there, and I've never forgotten about your parents.

Yohack: I remember what he means by that window! I'll explain later, let's go!
Nessen: R-right!

Yohack leads Nessen to a residential area.
Nessen: Is this it? It's probably locked though...
Yohack: It's okay! If that window's the same as before then it's okay to go in! Maybe.
Nessen: I-I guess this is a desperate time. But what does he mean by that window?
Yohack: It's the window I used to get in through when I was a kid. Then Astosis's dad changed the lock but gave me a copy of the key! I know how the lock works and I have my tools, so I'll go pick it open! Wait here.
Yohack circles around, then eventually opens the front door from the inside.
Yohack: Wow everything looks the same...but it was harder getting in because I got bigger though. Also whenever I tried being sneaky, Astosis said he already knew I was there.
Nessen: Aww, how cute. By the way, is Astosis's father here?
Yohack: Oh, he already passed away...
Yohack looks down.

Nessen: O-oh I'm so sorry!
Yohack: No, I'm sorry I didn't say so earlier!
Yohack picks up a photo on the desk after a moment.
Yohack: It suddenly happened some years after Astosis became an attorney. Astosis worked really hard to take over the office, and now he's famous in town! Then he was appointed to my parents's tri--oh right, we have to look for the evidence!
Nessen: Please slow down enough that you won't miss anything. Are we looking for something related to your parents?
Yohack perks back up a little.
Yohack: Maybe! Uhh...
Nessen: Wish we had a note or something. And to recheck, Astosis was your parents' lawyer?
Yohack: Yeah. Oh right, we're looking for the records!
Nessen: Yes, maybe he left a hint in there. Let's split up to look. Good thing they use paper records here. Can you check if Astosis left anything else?
Yohack: Okay!

One search later
Yohack: I couldn't find anything...
Nessen: Me neither...
Yohack and Nessen turn towards one spot.
Yohack: There's still there though...
Nessen: Yes, though I didn't want to search something so valuable...
It's a safe.
Yohack: Well if Astosis told us to go here, there must be something. Sorry about this!
Yohack examines the safe.
Yohack: No bio-lock and my tools should be fine. Uhh...
Yohack stops.

Nessen: What's wrong?
Yohack: My tools will work, but there's a number lock...
Nessen: Oh. Maybe try whatever you can think of?
Yohack: Okay! Astosis's birthday...? Nope. His dad's birthday? ...nope. Mine? ...nope. Um, I'm all out of ideas!
Nessen: What else could Astosis have--OH!
Yohack: WHAT, what is it!?
Nessen: He said he never forgot about your parents! They were his first case, right?

Yohack: You were right! ...it was the day their trial ended. It still bothers him.
Nessen: Maybe he cared that much about you all.
Yohack: ...yeah. He kept fighting it even after the trial turned against them.
Nessen: Oh. We should thank him again when we get back.
Yohack: Yeah! Oh, but first we have to save MC!
Yohack pulls out a space flash drive from the safe.
Nessen: A space flash drive?
Yohack: Lemme check...blueprints? I'll send them to your phone.
Nessen: Hmm, yes these look like blueprints. The museum's...wait, look there!
Yohack: The ballroom? What's--
Nessen: All these walls are too thick. I've seen a lot of blueprints in my work life. I'll look into it more, so can you check for any other information?
Yohack: Okay! I'll check the safe some more!

Nessen: Ready to go over what we found?
Yohack: Yep!
Nessen pulls out his phone and the castle blueprints.
Nessen: I'm 90% sure there's a secret passage in the ballroom.
Yohack: The moving walls and stuff?
Nessen: Yes, that. The walls are thick enough to fit another passageway in there, and there's a strange space right behind the Poderna.
Yohack: ...wait.
Nessen: Yes, that means there's another way in besides the window.
Yohack: Oh, so we can prove MC isn't the only possible suspect!
Nessen: It's not definite proof, but yes. What did you find?
Yohack: There was another section in the safe that had documents in it. They look like my parents' trial records and stuff.
Nessen: Oh. But why were they in there?
Yohack: Astosis's notes say the evidence used was illegal. He says there's been fake evidence used as far back as his dad's time!
Nessen looks angry.
Nessen: We should hurry back and stop this!

Present
MC: Oh...
Nessen: Our theory is that someone came out of the secret passage when the lights went out and stole the Poderna. And the person who did that is...
MC: Someone who knew about the passage. One of the Chasseur.
Yohack: ...I bet they want to kick out everyone not native to the planet.
Nessen: Yohack, what ARE the Chasseur?
Yohack looks sad.
Yohack: It's an organization meant to protect Courrèges by Courrèges's people. That's how it was when I was little, and I think it still is. But then some people started thinking it should only be done by Courrèges's people, so they want to throw out everyone else.
MC: I see. Bunk logic though.
Nessen: Yohack, is the reason your parents were kicked out...
Yohack: Yeah, I think so now. They'd say good techniques come from anywhere. But it's okay, my family and I are living freely outside Courrèges now! ...but I still want to stop what the Chasseur are doing. People can like and hate whoever they want, but they shouldn't push it onto other people!
Nessen: I agree.
MC: Yeah, let's stop them! Also they're bitches for what they did to me.
Coming up to the exit now.

Nessen: According to the blueprints, this leads back to the balcony from before. Shall we decide what we'll do when we get out there?
Yohack: I think Astosis and the Chasseur are out there.
MC: Astosis said he was counting on us. If nothing else he can't have gone far.
Nessen: Yes, I believe he'll be waiting for us to bring back evidence. It should at least lower suspicion against MC, but if not we'll have to break out from here. Then we find Maculata, leave, and have all contracts pass through our agencies in the future.
Yohack: Yep! Either way, I'll protect you, MC!
MC: Right, let's go!

Space French Guard: It's just one guy, how have we not taken him down yet!?
Gaisei: Ohh, you can still keep this up? Give me all you have!
Nessen: !? ...well then.
Yohack: Has he been fighting this whole time...?
Yup, Gaisei's been fighting this whole time.
MC: Damn, and the mob wolves bailed already. He's really into battles...
Nessen: I don't think we can talk things out like this. Keep your guard up as we look for Astosis!

Astosis: We must go over all testimony before we can say any circumstantial evidence is valid. That is why we are here.
Red: And the Poderna could be off planet by now! I KNEW offworlders would ruin everything!
More tablebanging.

Astosis: Please refrain from unfounded accusations and emotional arguments in cases of criminal guilt charges.
Red: Pffft, who cares!? A foreigner stole the Poderna, whether them or that other villain!
Gaisei's here too. MC and Gaisei look at each other.
MC: I didn't do it. / ...
Gaisei: ...can we just fight instead of all this circuitous talking?
Astosis: Quiet, you may yet be judged for your attack on the party hall. But back to the Poderna. If we hope to recover it, the truth is ever more important.

Rando: Oh no, the Poderna!
Astosis: !!
MC: What!? Where's Maculata!?
Not there at least. But you know who IS here?

Space French Guards with guns pointed at MC's party!
Astosis: ...what are you all doing?
Red: Nobody move! We're arresting everyone as suspects for the Poderna's loss!
MC: WHAT

Astosis: ...I'm responsible for security here. Shouldn't you evacuate the guests and detain the villains first?
Red: ...I know. We'll talk about your responsibilities later.
Astosis turns to Gaisei and the mobs.
Mobs: DAMMIT
Gaisei: Too late to back out I suppose. I'll just have to wait for a chance then.
Gaisei disengages and walks over to the mobs.
Red: Don't resist, outsiders!
Astosis: ...so, what's this about EVERYONE in the ball being suspects over the Poderna theft?
Red: Did I stutter? I KNOW those villains and the offworld security hired help are in collusion to steal the Poderna.
More Space French Guards surround MC's party.
Astosis: ...this is going nowhere. Can we at least do this elsewhere so we don't disturb the guests?
Red: ...fine.

Later
Some Space French Guards stay at the ballroom to investigate. Everyone else moves to that jail room. Everyone quits out of their hero suits.
Astosis: ...so MC and the others are suspected of colluding with villains?
Yohack: I-impossible! We were hired to help protect it!
Nessen: Indeed. We have no reason to steal the Poderna. Plus, we were in combat when the lights went out, so how did the Poderna disappear?
Red: We're looking into that...hey, get to doing body checks.
Blue and Purple: ...roger.
Body checks for Nessen and Yohack. Then MC's turn.
Astosis: !?
MC: wait what

They found a hidden pocket in MC's ball outfit. It had a gemstone accessory in it.
Red: ...that's part of the Poderna. Explain?
Astosis: Yes, explain. It would be unnatural for a criminal to be carrying that. I prepared the clothes and the Chasseur were the ones who checked them earlier.
Red: Yes, nothing was wrong earlier. This was stolen from the ballroom, which means either they or the villain did it.
Astosis: Then shouldn't you suspect the villains who clearly came to commit crimes first?
Yohack: Yeah! We were fighting when it disappeared! We couldn't have gotten close!
Nessen: Agreed. Couldn't the villains have a B team come in to steal the Poderna while we were fighting?

Gaisei: Excuse me, but there is no B team.
Red Wolf: Gaisei, what!?
Gaisei: We have already lost. Why resist?
Purple Wolf: Hmm, Gaisei makes sense. We didn't steal the Poderna!
Gaisei: We were hired to cause a disturbance by a thieves gang. Except we failed, so they likely cut us loose and fled already.
Red Wolf: Y-yeah! We didn't do it, have mercy!
Astosis: You expect us to believe that?
Red: Actually I found proof they're right.
Red points at some screen.
Red: Drone camera footage. No one came in or out when the lights went out.
MC: uhhhh, what about stealth suits??? / ...

Yohack: W-wait, what if there were anti-drone stealth suits or something?
Red: Do those things make weight disappear too? All doors stayed closed, meaning the only entry point was the broken window. Which leads to a balcony and the garden. No tracks were found.
Yohack: U-um...but MC stealing the Poderna is impossible!
Red: Prove it, thief. There were no external trespassers after lights went out. Suspects would have to be nearby the Poderna, meaning you and the villains. Conveniently, you're missing a member so they must have run off with it!
MC: Oof, where is Maculata? Also, tyranny!
Astosis: This is unacceptable! There needs to at least be some evidence prov--
Red: Shut up! Arrest them!
Here comes the handcuffs!
Nessen: Oof, MC we might have to make a break for it...
Yohack: Yeah they won't listen! We should try to find Maculata!
Nessen and Yohack stand in front of MC! Gaisei's been cuffed already as he stands up and smiles.
Gaisei: Ooh, violent resistance at false accusations? I am so in.
MC: N-now hold on! / wait Gaisei aren't you cuffed up?
(C) Gaisei: Oh, you're worried for me? I can still revenge kill one or two people like this if I have to. Or do other things if I had time to think of them, but alas.

Gaisei seems chill about this.
Astosis: All of you, please. Bide your time for now.
Astosis steps in.
Astosis: Let's say for now I concede that circumstantial evidence points to MC being the criminal for now.
Yohack: wait WHAT
Astosis signals for Yohack to wait.
Astosis: In return, Nessen and Yohack are to be released from suspicion.
Red: You expect us to agree to that?
Astosis: Your current theory means both cannot be guilty. I guarantee Nessen was only here by chance, a tourist I just gave a VIP invite to later. He wasn't even hired to help with security.
Red: ...go on.

Astosis: Yohack was sent as a substitute from his agency. Arguing that he has guilt means arguing whatever problem the original member to be sent was intentional sabotage and the Chasseur had missed this.
Red: ...who's side are you on!?
Astosis: The truth's. You insist this is some conspiracy, so there are no objections to clearing Nessen and Yohack from suspicion, I trust?
The Space French Guards have no immediate response. Astosis takes Nessen and Yohack to the door.
Yohack: Wait, let us stay!
Nessen: Yes, please!

Astosis whispers.
Astosis: Listen, this is a precarious situation. I'm sure MC is being scapegoated, but I can't prove it yet. Please go find evidence.
Nessen: But how do we even--
Red: Stop whispering and get out if you aren't suspects!
Astosis: ...yes, they will soon enough. Oh right, Yohack?
Yohack: Y-yeah?
Astosis: If you're going back to town, I wanted to tell you that window's the same as before, the memories are still there, and I've never forgotten about your parents.

Red sighs and turns to MC after so long.
Red: This has gone long enough. No new evidence was found.
Astosis: ...gh. No objections...
MC: Wait just a bit longer!
Red: We officially arrest MC as the suspect for the theft of the Poderna. But before we move you to a detainment cell we have to parade this to everyone at the ball!
Astosis: Now hold on, MC's guilt hasn't actually been proven yet!
Red: If you want evidence you have until the trial. Not that it'll matter much. You'll be charged next after them, attorney!
Astosis: ...!
MC and the villains get moved elsewhere.

Red: Foreigners stole the Poderna!

Red: Yeah. We still have people watching that shop.
Astosis: So you can't prove any links between them. Still keeping up the premise anyway?
Red: Well you can't prove they DON'T have links.
Astosis: ...there is something truly remarkable in your ability to blame MC for a mistake you made.
Red: It's how we defend what we have to. Anyways, the last bit we have to go over is...
MC: During the security detail.
Red: Right, we're almost done with this nonsense.
Astosis: That's the part with me, MC's party, the Chasseur, and...
MC: The villains, yeah.
Astosis: Yes, at the masquerade ball where the Poderna got stolen somehow. Still need to figure out who, how, and why.
Red: You can just confess already rather than drag out your guilt.

Yohack: Oh yeah huh! I think he and his neighbors in the district did the hallway decorations.
Nessen: Oh, that explains why looking at the hall is so fun.
Astosis: I'm happy for you. Let's keep going.

Astosis: So like I said earlier, you'll be part of the masquerade ball. If something hero-related happens, you can transform to deal with it. Anything else can be done by the Chasseur. In short, just stand by for emergencies. MC, Maculata, take these please.
MC: Fancy clothes and mask!
Astosis: There's no actual dress code, but this is a present from me.

Maculata: It's fine, just work formalities.

MC: I'm not done yet!
Astosis: MC is correct. Trials require deliberation before passing judgment, and this isn't even a courtroom, but an interrogation. More explanation is needed.
Red: You siding with foreigners?
Astosis: No, I seek the truth. To do so, I must parse through MC's testimony.
MC: I didn't do it! / (...)
Red: Pfffft. FINE, whatever. Keep the farce going. So what did you do after you came to the city, MC?
MC: Well...

Astosis: Allow me to explain our main plot device and the masquerade ball the plot device will be at.
Astosis makes a quick check everyone is paying attention.
Astosis: As stated in the contract, we'd like you to be on security for the festival here in Courrèges. What do you know about it?
MC: Adoring planet Luna, fancy dress showing, something something.
Astosis: Impressive prep research. So Courrèges is a city of traditional spinning and clothing which has recently gotten us attention from other planets. It hasn't even been 50 years since we've opened up and suddenly we have so many people coming in. Which of course means its share of troublemakers and culture shock. The security organization is trying, but they've never fought villains much before so we've asked for Observers and heroes for help.
Astosis nods.
Astosis: We'll be showing the historically valuable dress Poderna at the ball. Invite only, but we should still be on guard against villains and Monsters. You'll be patrolling, then joining the ball as guests while being interior security.
MC: Oh okay / Why aren't we just security like normal? / Ooh a ball
(B) Astosis: The vigilante guards are handling it, but their uniform is notably intimidating to the guests. Better to not bring down the mood more than necessary.
(C) Astosis: Heh, how relaxed of you. Enjoy it, but don't lose too much focus.

MC: I heard about it but wow those really are on. Can I ask why?

Astosis: Sure, it isn't confidential or anything. So a long time ago we had severe Monster damage happening. We had barely opened up communications then, so we didn't know much about heroes and what few heroes we had were easily crushed. We got reinforced from offplanet heroes, but there still was great damage to our infrastructure, which lead to the Chasseurs forming. They wanted to defend their homes themselves, so they put up the network restrictions. It never got taken down since then since it didn't affect daily life.
Astosis sighs.
Astosis: Tradition sounds flattering, but it's also restrictive. But that aside, I need to get going for one last meeting before the ball. Excuse me, but please feel free to look around until the ball starts.
Astosis turns to Yohack.

It's Astosis!
Astosis: They are a suspect, and due process says no violence is allowed for investigation and interrogation.
Red: Hmph. Damn attorney. Whatever, start talking about when you first got here.
Astosis: MC, I'm sorry you got caught up in this. But please, bear with it and take your time as you tell us what happened.
MC: ...fine.

Rewind!
Several weeks ago or something. It's autumn! MC goes to Parallel Flight.
MC: I'm back! Getting cold out there.
Akashi: Hey MC.
Sui: Hello MC. Oh you have a leaf on you, I'll get it.
Akashi: Fall already, huh? So nice out I might overdo my outdoor workouts.
Sui: Yeah it's been hot until recently. I think your tan lines have faded. How furries could get those is a mystery.
Akashi: You went to Muirauqa IV, huh? I spent all summer at baseball training camps...
MC: Hey Akashi, how about we go to some hot springs sometime? / Sui, thanks for the skin care stuff!

Mokdai: Hey MC. You guys want some Chinese buns? I was watching Yuhang's logs and suddenly bought a bunch.
Melide: I'm going on break too. Want tea? I'm about to make some.
MC: Sure, thanks Mokdai / Sure, thanks Melide
(A) Mokdai: Okay! There's pork, pizza, curry, red beans...even this seasonal sweet potato bun! Sure is autumn.
(B) Melide: Here you go, hope you like it.

MC: Hey where's everyone else?
Sui: Ryekie, Exio, Yoshiori, and Monomasa went to some event meeting.
Mokdai: Tis the event season. I wonder which hero will show up!
Sui: Fanboying is fine, but weren't you asked to appear as a hero too? Won't you be busy?
Mokdai: I-I know, but it just hits different watching from a screen! Oh wait, the topic. Crowne's in a meeting.
Sui: She said she's working on a new gadget with Master. Director Huckle's around too, but he's been in a meeting this whole--oh wait here he is.
Huckle is making a face as he comes out.
Huckle: Hmm...
MC: Hi Director, I'm back! I'll give the report later. (Huh, what's with the face?)
Huckle: ...o-oh, welcome back MC! I take it your meeting went fine.
Huckle goes back to thinking again.
Huckle: ...well I'm not getting anywhere. MC, Melide, can I have a moment?
 MC: Okay, what's up? / (be scared)
(C) Huckle: U-um, you can relax. I just need to talk to you two. 

Melide: So, is this Operator work you want to talk about?
Huckle: Yes actually, so I wanted your opinions.
Huckle seems worried.
Huckle: We got a dispatch request for an on-site Operator who can do anything. Specifically, they want security support for some traditional festival thing. The client's a hero too, so the main job is supporting them.
Melide: Um, what makes this different from any other job?
Huckle: The location. It's a planet in a far-off galaxy that never did much interplanetary exchange, so there's restrictions and distant streaming won't work. There's not much information on the place, so it's risky. I've turned it down for now, but still...
MC: Huh. Something else happen?

Huckle: Yes, I've been in a call with them all day.
Melide: Didn't you turn them down though?
Huckle: They called back begging to negotiate.
Surprised gang!
Melide: Wait, are on site Operators that rare? Not that I've seen many others myself though.
Huckle: Right, most Operators don't work that way and other agencies don't like sending them out. The client tried asking other agencies and they all said no. One of them told the client about you two, how you go on location, and how good you are. That's nice, but then it sounds like we're the only agency doing that... but what do you two think?
Melide: Hmm. I think I'm up for it, risky as it may be. I know what it's like to look for help and not find anything...
MC: I'm in! / Well if they're that hard up... / Hmm, concerning...
(AB) Huckle: Thanks you two.
(C) Huckle: Thanks you two. I'll support you as best as I can of course.

Huckle: I suppose we can negotiate it then. Since the planet's in a closed system, we'll have to send a hero with you...
Huckle checks the schedule. MC's got more space to go.
MC: So, me? Better get ready. Kind of exciting!
Melide: It'd be better if I went too...
Huckle: Thanks MC. We can send you next time, Melide. But anyways, we still need to find a hero to go with you...
Akashi: U-uh, me! MC's gonna blow things up if they go alone!
MC: RUUUUDE / not ALL the time! / (look away)
Huckle: Not to interrupt, but the job lands on a weekday. Can you swing that, Akashi?
Akashi has a flash of Toshu in his mind!

Huckle: I think it'd be a great experience, but you should focus on school.
Super disappointed Akashi.

Mokdai: So where is this job happening anyway?
Huckle: Oh, right. It's in a city called Closure or Courrèges or something.

Maculata: Was it you, Huckle!?
Crowne: O-okay hang on a minute, stop yelling, and chill Maculata! What the hell got into you?
Maculata: Oh, right. Excuse me.
MC: You okay Crowne? / Hi Maculata, long time no see! / oh are you two done with your meeting?
(A) Crowne: I guess. But seriously, what?
(B) Maculata: Oh hello MC, back from Muirauqa IV? Let's see...ah, you've been using the skin care products Sui gave you. I'd have given you such an earful if you still had tan lines, even somehow through fur if you have any.

Crowne: Hey MC, we just finished delivering on the gadget we were asked for.
Maculata: Perfect as always. I'll ask you again when I get another idea.
Crowne: Cool thanks, come again. So what's all this crow bird nonsense or whatever?
Maculata: It's Courrèges or something you uncultured swine! Anyways Huckle, it's that one city of fashion and textiles, right?
Intense Maculata!
Huckle: I don't know what kind of city it is, but yes Courrèges sounds right. Why?
Maculata: I was planning on taking a vacation to go there soon and attend their festival.
Huckle: Wow, what a coincidence. We know nothing about the festival or city.
Maculata: Not surprising. Even the fashion world only just heard of the place. They made super fine and unique styles while isolated on the level of cutting fashion and their festival is a once a year deal. I'm going, and nothing, no one will stop me.
Huckle: ...so you've been there before?
Maculata: Yes, enough to know the main important layout.
Thinking Huckle.

Huckle: ...soooo, Maculata my friend, my esteemed colleague.
Maculata: Yeees, Huckle my darling, my lovely compatriot.
MC: Welp.
Maculata: So Director, how about I go as your Operator's bodyguard?
Huckle: Sounds good to me, Miss Veteran Hero. I'll contact Creative Brain and see what they say, then send the contract if they okay it.
Maculata: I'll contact them too. They should be fine with it.
Maculata types on her phone.
Maculata: Okay Sui you heard all that. I'm changing up my plans, so hold down the studio for me?
Sui: Y-yes ma'am. Um, Courrèges is that city with the fashion museum you told me about, right? Could you take some pictures...?
Maculata: Got it, it should be great reference for you. I'll bring back as much as I can.
Sui: Thank you!
Maculata: And there we have it. MC, we leave in three days. Don't forget to pack up.
MC: well that was fast

And so all the relevant paperwork is done. Fast forward to departure day!
MC and Maculata are in a space taxi to the Sunflower Galaxy.
MC: I wonder what Courrèges is like? / I notice we aren't taking your own spaceship.

(C) Maculata: Oh you remember that? We could have, but if we're jumping straight to work then this is easier. But next time, come with Sui. I can invite you on our studio office trip and I'll drive.

Maculata: Okay, I'd better give you a crash course on Courrèges before we get there.

Maculata: Huckle told you Planet Whatsitname only just started opening up with other planets, right? Well we're going to Courrèges, which has only barely managed to be in interstellar contact for 50 years. They've got original designs that's gotten the spotlight recently so--oh wait I said that already. Well you'll see soon for yourself. I should talk about the festival we'll be guarding then.
Maculata passes MC a drink.

Maculata: So Courrèges is really big on the moon. Actually, it's a city with a lunar view.
MC: what
Maculata: Their moon looks almost exactly like Earth's moon, but they only get to see it once a year. Well, more like it's another planet that comes up nice and pretty only once a year. Every time it does, it looks different just like Earth's moon. Anyways, the people of Courrèges think it's special and have the festival for it. They call it Luna by the way.
Maculata smiles.
Maculata: So on years when Luna looks like a full moon? They exhibit a really special dress at a ball in their art museum, and coincidentally that's this year!
MC: Huh / this might be my first real ball! / oh is that what the security is for?
(C) Macalata: Correct.

Maculata: That dress I mentioned is called the Poderna, very valuable historically and artistically speaking. Since the city's gotten more famous, having the dress on display gets riskier. I think they sent out reinforcement requests for security since they don't have enough hands for that.
Time to change the subject.
Maculata: You know, I'm glad to be on this job with you MC. You've gotten better with every job, so I've wanted to work with you full power at least once. Also the ball's an invite-only affair, so joining the security detail's a nice way to get closer!
MC: Welp! / Tell me how you really feel.

Touchdown! There's a welcoming party at the space port.
Astosis: Hello. Are you MC and Miss Alsciaukat?
Maculata: Yes, thank you for coming to get us Mister Neras. I'm Maculata Alsciaukat from Creative Brain.
Macalata steps forward to cover for MC and bows.
MC: Hello I'm MC. Nice to meet you. / (omg he's hot)

Astosis: I'm glad to meet you in person now. To reintroduce myself, I am Astosis Neras, attorney and your client for this security job. I'm also part of the security organization as a hero as you call them. In the interests of better relationships, may I give you a hello hug?
Astosis spreads his arms.
Maculata: Oh, how bold. Alright.
MC: I don't mind. / Okay! / could we not...?
(B) Astosis: How passionate! I should show the same level of passion for fairness's sake.
(C) Astosis: Oh, excuse me.

Maculata: So Mister Neras, mind introducing the nameless thugs with you?
Astosis: Astosis is fine, please. They're also members of the Chasseur security organization.
Red and Blue: (stares)
Astosis: I apologize for their rudeness, but for now they're my rotating shift guards. Being in a law profession means villains have more reasons to go after me. But please don't mind them. I'd like to talk about the job, but there's actually one other person I asked to come over and I'd like to start once he comes...

Yohack: Oh I made it! Hi I'm Yohack, I came for a hero job! I'm a locksmith in the Muirauqa star system, but I also do some servicing for other machines and stuff!
MC: Hi I'm MC, nice to meet you. / ooh, fluffy
(C) Yohack: Why are you staring at me? Oh wait, I know! You want a hug? Okay!

Maculata: Hello, I'm Maculata.
Yohack: Nice to meet you too! Let's do our best on the security thing! Also fun fact, I'm from Courrèges so I can tell you anything you're confused about!
Astosis seems surprised to see Yohack.
Astosis: ...a-are you THAT Yohack? Why are you here?
Yohack: Wow, long time no see Astosis! I thought I might see you after I saw your name on the contract!
Astosis: Yes, very long time. But why are you here? Are you--
Yohack: Yep, it's me! It was originally someone else in Laborer's Site until they got hurt, so I was subbed in. The contract should've been sent!
Astosis: I haven't seen anything though. One moment...
Astosis checks his phone and sighs.

Astosis: ...I see it now. One of the Chasseurs accepted it. Sorry for the late reply. Anyways, I don't think I've seen you since the last time the Poderna was on display.
Yohack: Yep! I'mma visit your office when this is all done!
MC: Um, you know each other?
Yohack: Oh, whoops!
Astosis: Yohack used to live here. We've known each other for a long time.
Yohack: When I was a kid I used to play in Astosis's family's law office a lot!
Astosis: Yes, Father was angry at how you just barged in. But never mind that now, I should explain your assignment. I'd like you all to protect the Poderna at the masquerade ball.
